7 in 10 UK Adults Unaware Of Mental Health Side Of Chronic Lung Disease

A recent survey by YouGov, commissioned by Dr. Devi Sundar, an Integrative Mind-Body Consultant, founder of MindBody Synergy CIC, based in Gloucestershire and Tele-Therapies based in London, UK, reveals some alarming findings. About 7 in 10 (69%) UK adults do not realize that chronic lung diseases—like COPD, asthma, and long COVID—can lead to significant mental health challenges. This lack of awareness could have serious consequences for patients.

Dr. Sundar sought insights through this survey to pinpoint patient needs and highlight the critical gaps in public understanding and healthcare delivery for people with chronic respiratory disease.

Many patients experience psychological effects described as “emotional breathlessness.” This can manifest as anxiety, fear, and feelings of isolation. Sadly, these issues are often overlooked, compounding the struggles of patients who are already dealing with challenging physical symptoms.

Why Awareness Matters

Chronic lung disease extends beyond just breathing difficulties. It can deeply affect a person's quality of life. Untreated mental health challenges can lead to:

  • Worsened physical symptoms: For instance, studies suggest that anxiety can exacerbate breathlessness, making it even harder for patients to manage their condition.

  • Lower adherence to treatment: Patients suffering from depression might miss medications or appointments, which results in poorer health outcomes.

  • Increased risk of complications: Research indicates that individuals with both chronic illness and mental health issues have a 58% higher risk of hospitalization.

The survey also revealed significant demographic differences in awareness. Younger adults (ages 18–24) and men were less aware of these mental health implications. Meanwhile, older adults (55+) and women showed a somewhat higher level of understanding. This highlights a pressing need for targeted educational programs. Taking Action

Dr. Devi Sundar is actively pushing for the inclusion of mental health support within pulmonary rehabilitation programs. In her 2024 campaign, she petitioned the UK Parliament to establish a national COPD mental health strategy. She continues to lead campaign for the same cause locally in Gloucestershire.

Combating stigma, raising awareness, and providing comprehensive care are keys to addressing this complex issue. Living with chronic lung disease requires attention to both mental and physical health.

How you Can Help

Addressing this crucial challenge requires actionable steps:

  • Educate patients and caregivers about the psychological effects of chronic lung disease: Providing simple, accessible information about mental health impacts can empower patients. For instance, workshops that explain the links between breathlessness and anxiety can help patients seek necessary support.

  • Include mental health screenings in routine pulmonary care: Regular mental health assessments can identify problems early. Studies have shown that early intervention can improve outcomes, reducing hospital visits by up to 30% for chronic lung disease patients.

  • Raising awareness for change: Sign the petition : “Integrate Mental and Physical Health Care for COPD Patients in Gloucestershire” https://www.change.org/MentalHealthCOPD

  • Share this blog post to raise awareness

By advocating for these strategies, we can create a supportive environment for those living with chronic lung diseases.

Moving Forward

The data from Dr. Sundar's survey emphasizes the urgent need to increase public awareness of the mental health implications associated with chronic lung diseases. With 7 in 10 UK adults unaware, we must take immediate action to educate both the public and healthcare providers.

Integrating mental health support into healthcare systems is not just beneficial; it is vital for enhancing the quality of life for patients. As we progress, prioritizing both physical and mental health in the treatment of chronic lung disease is essential. Let’s work together to ensure that no patient faces these challenges in isolation.

By building a culture of awareness and support, we can help individuals manage their conditions better, leading to improved health outcomes and a more compassionate society.
